First Aid in the Workplace

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces, including those with less than 5 employees and to the self-employed. Employers also have a duty of care towards all visitors and users of their facilities.

Employers are required to carry out an assessment of first aid needs to determine what should be provided.

Please contact us if you need some advice, or for more information please see the HSE website, view the full HSE Guidance on Regulations or the HSE Guide to First Aid at Work Questions and Answers

Basic Life Support (BLS) / Basic Skills Refresher

Duration: 1/2 day / 3 hours

First Aid skills and confidence fade so the HSE strongly recommend that First Aiders complete annual refresher training.  This short three hour course in Basic Life Support is designed to refresh skills in dealing with life threatening emergencies in the workplace focusing on the latest Resuscitation Council (UK) Basic Life Support protocols.

The syllabus for the FAW and EFAW course is set by the HSE and is designed for staff to administer first aid to employees.  Therefore, these courses cover ADULT protocols only. If your workplace requires additional training outside of the standard syllabus then please let us know and we can arrange some additional time to do this.

APPOINTED PERSONSWhen an employer's first aid needs assessment indicates that a first aider is unnecessary, the minimum requirement is to appoint a person to look after the first aid equipment and call the emergency services when required.

Appointed persons do not need first aid training therefore it is important to remember that they are not First Aiders unless they have done the EFAW or FAW course.

Elements First Aid recommend that all appointed persons do the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work course so are qualified to look after the first aid equipment AND administer First Aid in the workplace.
